Pet referrals for specialist advice

Our skilled Veterinary Surgeons at Rouken Glen Vets can perform most procedures using in-house facilities but sometimes we may advise referral for very specialised care.

We’ll usually need to see your pet to decide whether we need to refer them to a veterinary Specialist.

Just as in human medicine, specialists have accredited expertise in specific areas of veterinary medicine.

A veterinary Specialist is a vet who has had advanced training in their area of expertise, and who also fulfils other criteria such as involvement in training others in the veterinary profession and undertaking clinical research to improve the treatment outcomes for pets. Specialist vet status, which is governed by the RCVS and European colleges, is extremely difficult to achieve and maintain, and is the highest level of expertise that can be attained in clinical veterinary practice.

When referrals are necessary, we have an excellent relationship with many specialists in Scotland and can refer your pet to the best facility available.

Veterinary treatment can be expensive

For most pet owners, it’s a wise investment. Speak to us about the insurance plan for you and your pet.
